Welcome to the Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dragon. The Year of the Dragon is meant to be difficult. Remember that with great difficulties comes great successes.
Personal Statement advice:
As I've been thinking what would have helped my 100+ hours of personal statement writing be more effective I remembered how difficult it was to come up with the right medically related stories when the pressure was on. I know you are very busy but I would recommend spending a simple 30 min. may only one day a week and begin recording your medical experiences.
Make a journal where you can store these experiences. I went through about 20 personal experiences in story form and had about 3-4 versions or perspectives of each of those stories. It is helpful to begin searching the crevises of your mind for these. If you make the time, you will have a wonderful cache to work with as you begin writing your personal statement!
Questions to help get you started:
-What was it like when you provide someone with improve their personal wellbeing?
-Have you seen other culture's health care?
-What interests you most about medicine?
-How did you feel when you helped someone do something simple? Could you imagine if that feeling was magnified by helping someone walk again or breath on their own?
-Why do you want to go into medicine? (cliche but very important to articulate)
-Are there any stories related to your answer?
-Who have you seen practice medicine that is an inspiration to you?
Take one of these questions a week, think about it while reading this blog and write something down. Hey, if you want, write it in the comments. Whatever you find helpful. Peruse through your mind and pull out as many experiences as possible. This will SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME.
In high school I had a friend named Paul. Paul and I would play checkers every day. He, 54 and down-syndrome, I, 16... Have fun replaying your life on paper!!
Wow, you are thorough! Good for you sharing your tips, Michael. Best wishes with your journey.
